Why I joined a choir

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the choir I sing with, Draycott Sounds — and honestly, I didn’t expect joining would become such a defining part of my life.

When I first walked into a rehearsal, I wasn't even sure I belonged there. I hadn’t sung in a group since school, and the idea of reading music in front of strangers was intimidating. But I was greeted with warmth, encouragement, and a sense of fun that made all that nervousness melt away. Very quickly, choir nights became the highlight of my week.

There’s something powerful about singing in harmony with others — especially when you’ve all worked hard to perfect a tricky arrangement or bring energy to a familiar favourite. We’re not professionals, and that’s the joy of it. We come from all walks of life, but for an hour or two each week, we create something together that lifts us all.

The choir has also deepened my appreciation for what community music can offer: confidence, connection, a boost to wellbeing, and the rare chance to be present in the moment. In a world that often pulls us in a hundred directions, that’s no small thing.

So as we celebrate 10 years of song, friendship and laughter, I’m raising a glass (and a note) to the people who make it all happen — our brilliant musical director, the core team who keep everything running behind the scenes, and every singer who’s added their voice along the way.

If you’ve ever thought about joining a choir, I can’t recommend it enough. You don’t have to read music. You don’t need a “perfect voice.” Just show up, open your mouth, and let the music do the rest.
